Tree Pruning, Shaping & Thinning in Christchurch

Pruning to keep trees healthy and tidy

Regular pruning keeps trees healthy, safe and looking their best. We cover general pruning, shaping, thinning and crown lifting, whether it’s to let more light through, clear a roofline or path, or tidy a tree that’s got out of hand.

Good pruning is about taking off the right branches, not just the most of them. We make clean cuts in the right places, so the tree heals well and keeps its natural shape. We prune trees across Christchurch’s eastern suburbs, including Shirley, Richmond, Wainoni, North New Brighton and Dallington, and right across the city.

What each type of pruning does

General pruning removes dead, damaged and crossing branches to keep the tree healthy and safe.
Shaping keeps a tree to a size and form that suits your section.
Thinning removes selected branches to let light and air through the crown.
Crown lifting removes lower branches to clear paths, driveways, fences and views.

Most jobs use a mix of these. We’ll look at the tree on a free site visit and tell you straight what it needs.

Matt and assistant did an excellent job. He followed our instruction very well. His cut is tidy and shapely. Also his attitude is very friendly. We are very happy with his job. We have not much hesitant for recommending him to my friends if they look for reasonably priced nice mannered and skillful arborists.

Matt and his team have been cutting our hedges and trees for a while now and we have been super impressed with all the work they do , the hedges have never looked so neat and tidy and they leave the place clean and tidy when they've finished , we would highly recommend them for any tree work or hedge cutting.

Great team, great workmanship and great price. We had them trim back a very large and tall oak tree away from our house and a number of other trees cut down and cleared away. Canterbury TreeWorks arrived on time and got right into it. They cleaned up all the debris and left the garden in tip top shape. Would happily recommend and use again in future.

Matt was asked to quote for the removal of two very large trees and some general pruning. His rate was very competitive, and the job was expertly completed. He and his team were a pleasure to deal with and left our garden in a pristine state. I would not hesitate to recommend his services.

Matt & Josh did an awesome job of lowering and shaping our confer that was blocking our solar panels. Matt is pleasant to deal with and is a great communicator. He is mindful of surroundings when working and is very knowlegeable. We will definitely get the team back to trim our shared driveway. Highly recommended.

Common questions

When’s the best time to prune?

It depends on the tree. Some are best pruned in winter, others are more flexible, and we’ll advise when we look at yours.

What’s the difference between pruning and a crown reduction?

Pruning removes selected branches and leaves the tree about the same size. A crown reduction brings down its overall height and spread.

Will pruning harm my tree

Done properly it helps. Poor cuts, or taking off too much, can stress a tree, which is why we cut cleanly and tell you what’s sensible rather than just taking off as much as possible.

Can you prune a tree near my fence or boundary?

Yes. Tell us where the boundary is and we’ll work carefully around fences and neighbouring gardens. If the tree is on a neighbour’s property, check with them first.

How much does pruning cost?

It depends on the size of the tree, access and how much needs doing. We quote after a free site visit, so the price is based on what we’ve actually seen.
