Crown Reductions in Christchurch

Reducing a tree without losing its shape

A crown reduction brings down the height and spread of a tree’s crown while keeping its natural shape. It’s a good option when a tree has outgrown its space, is shading the house or garden, or is getting too close to buildings.

Done properly, the tree still looks like itself, just smaller and lighter. We cut back to suitable branches so it keeps its shape and heals well. We carry out crown reductions across Christchurch’s eastern suburbs, including Burwood, Parklands, Queenspark and Shirley, and right across the city.

Is a crown reduction right for your tree?

Not every tree suits a reduction, and some are better pruned, thinned or removed. We’ll look at the tree on a free site visit and tell you straight what it needs.

The usual reasons people call us:

  • The tree is blocking light, views or solar panels
  • Branches are overhanging the house, fence or neighbour’s boundary
  • A big canopy is worrying you in the wind
  • It’s outgrown its spot, but you’d rather keep it than lose it

If a lighter prune or a removal is the better answer, we’ll say so.

What's included

  • Free on-site assessment and quote
  • Height and spread reduced
  • Natural shape kept
  • Distance from the house, fences and boundaries
  • Property left tidy
  • Clean-up: firewood and chipping

Matt and assistant did an excellent job. He followed our instruction very well. His cut is tidy and shapely. Also his attitude is very friendly. We are very happy with his job. We have not much hesitant for recommending him to my friends if they look for reasonably priced nice mannered and skillful arborists.

Matt & crew did an excellent job, left the area tidy, & were careful not to damage the other plants & juvenile trees nearby. Thank you :)

Matt and his team have been cutting our hedges and trees for a while now and we have been super impressed with all the work they do , the hedges have never looked so neat and tidy and they leave the place clean and tidy when they've finished , we would highly recommend them for any tree work or hedge cutting.

Great team, great workmanship and great price. We had them trim back a very large and tall oak tree away from our house and a number of other trees cut down and cleared away. Canterbury TreeWorks arrived on time and got right into it. They cleaned up all the debris and left the garden in tip top shape. Would happily recommend and use again in future.

Matt was asked to quote for the removal of two very large trees and some general pruning. His rate was very competitive, and the job was expertly completed. He and his team were a pleasure to deal with and left our garden in a pristine state. I would not hesitate to recommend his services.

Matt & Josh did an awesome job of lowering and shaping our confer that was blocking our solar panels. Matt is pleasant to deal with and is a great communicator. He is mindful of surroundings when working and is very knowlegeable. We will definitely get the team back to trim our shared driveway. Highly recommended.

Common questions

How much does a crown reduction cost?

It depends on the size of the tree, access, how much needs taking off and the clean-up. We quote after a free site visit, so the price is based on what we’ve actually seen.

How much can you take off?

It depends on the species and the tree’s health. We’ll tell you what’s sensible for your tree rather than promise a number.

How often does a tree need reducing?

It varies with the species and how fast it grows. We’ll give you a view on site.

Is a crown reduction the same as topping?

No. Topping removes the top of the tree and leaves large stubs. A reduction is selective and keeps the tree’s natural shape.

Do I need council consent?

Most trees on private property don’t, but some protected or notable trees do. We’ll talk it through on the site visit.

What happens to the branches?

We can cut the wood into firewood rings and leave them on site, or take them away. Branches are chipped into mulch.
